The daily plan
Your non negotiables (every day)
- Take a shower every morning, just water.
- Brush teeth morning and night.
- All dishes must be clean before you go to bed.
Basic house rules
- Trash goes in the trashcan.
- Meals are eaten at the table.
- Dirty dishes goes in the kitchen sink.
- Laundry goes in the laundry basket.
- Do a quick tidy every night.
- Optional: Track your ‘victory journal’ every night.
The quick tidy: Every night, go though each room of your house, and just tidy. Just put things back in their home, any dishes or trash you find, put it where it belongs. In the kitchen, this includes wiping crumbs off the counters (they are trash), and take care of any spills.
This habit is important, but it is not a non negotiable. This means, if you have to choose, focus on the dishes and your teeth over this, and just do it tomorrow.
The victory journal: Every night, spend 2 minutes writing down what you accomplished today. Just the bullet points. Wether it was cleaning the sink, using soap in your morning shower, or doing the dishes. Don’t spend time on how you feel about it - just what you got done. This will keep you focused on your ability to improve your situation, rather than let shame weigh you down and drain your energy. And if you feel stuck, you can flip through it, and see that you actually do get something done.
Mindset
- Progress, not perfection.
- Don’t make it perfect, just make it better than before.
- Consistency is better than discipline.
- Better to do things halfway, than not at all.
The Why
The non negotiables are your backbone; the bare minimum. If you get nothing else done this day, you will at least get these done, and feel proud of that. If things get out of hand, these things are the first you revert to and deal with, until you get back on track. This helps you navigate when everything seems chaotic, and you don’t know where to start.
The daily shower makes you feel more put together, and it will give you a feeling of being more productive. By not demanding yourself to use soap, and take a lot of time, you are just committing to getting your body wet. You are also getting used to the habit, and start to enjoy the routine. Same goes for brushing your teeth.
The dishes will get out of hand very quickly if you don’t keep on top of them. This will take up a lot of mental energy, and if it builds up too much, you will stop cooking proper food. This will mean less quality nourishment, and you will have less physical and mental energy to deal with the everyday things. Dishes are the root of spiralling - and the first thing to focus on when everything is chaos.
The basic house rules are what helps you keep things looking tidy on a daily basis, with very low effort. The are the basic structure for a more elaborate cleaning routine, but they are not essential in the same way as the non negotiables.
