Optional: Creating a style uniform
Sometimes, we hate everything in our closet, and have no idea what to wear in the morning. For those days, a style uniform can be very handy. You can do your entire closet with that if you want, or just have a few options as a go to when you don’t know what to wear.
A style uniform is meant as a guideline/base for inspiration. Something practical and appropriate for whatever situation you may find yourself in. It doesn’t have to be the same thing every day, and it doesn’t have to be boring.
Create your avatar
Imagine yourself as a cartoon character. If you were the most stereotypical version of yourself, what would your hair look like? What features would be most dominantly drawn? If you could only wear one outfit the rest of your life, what is the one outfit this character would be drawn in?
For me, this would be super wide leg jeans, a fitted lace cami, and sneakers. Gold necklace/earrings/bracelet. Curly hair around brastrap length. Small pouty lips and a very pointy nose. A square-ish chin.
Create variations
Once you have the outfit, it is easier to create a bit of variation in a real wardrobe. Look at the items for your character, and choose items that refer to that item, but is not quite the same.
For me, I could vary the color or the fit of the jeans. Have some wider leg, and some slimmer. For the top, I could swop the lace cami for a fitted black blouse (long sleeve or t-shirt) with or without lace details. For jewellery, I could keep the color, but have a few different shapes to choose from. Different kind of shoes depending on season. In the sommer, a flowy skirt or a fit and flare dress. This way, I still ‘honour’ something in the original outfit (either by shape, color or texture), but there is great options for variation.
Assemble the pieces
Once you have a more clear image, you can simplify your closet. (there is a separate document on that.) If you are missing pieces, keep the character in mind when you shop, to build a wardrobe that you are happy with.
