Step 2: Laying the foundation

  • Do the ‘non negotiables’ every day
  • Follow the house rules every day
  • Implement the 3 key systems:
    • Survival meal plan (week 1)
    • Laundry system (week 2)
    • Wardrobe simplification (week 3)
  • This will take time, but it is a key factor. Take this time to get used to the non negotiables and the house rules, so they feel somewhat natural, easy and enjoyable. When you completed the 3 key systems, keep doing the house rules and non negotiables, just maintain for a bit. Consistency is key here.
  • There is no set time limit, but I would recommend maintaining for at least 2-3 weeks after implementing all 3 systems, and longer if needed. This will give you a chance to get used to the new routines, and make small adjustments if you need to. And your brain likely need a little ‘rest’, since these are fairly big projects.
  • Once you feel comfortable in those habits, you succeed on most days (and find it fairly easy to get back on track if you miss a day or two), you can proceed to step 3.

The Why

Before you can start your basic habits, you need to have a foundation to build them on. Keeping your house should feel easy and effortless, not difficult and draining. The right systems will help you achieve this.

When you are overwhelmed, you need to forget about the perfectionism of the traditional systems, and focus on ‘functional’ systems. You can always improve and perfect them later. But for right now, the goal is easy and manageable.
